This is where I liveA little small dot is where I live.A little small dot in the world. It's name? The Lion City, Singapore.
Singapore has a very humble beggining as a small fishing village. It was called Temasek then. The small population was made up of people called the Orang Lauts. There is a famed legend of how Singapore got its name. There was once a prince who was sailing the seas. His name was Sang Nila Utama. While on the sea, the ship encountered a terrible storm and was capsizing. To save his ship, Sang Nila Utama threw his crown into the waters and the storm subsided.
Later, he stumbled onto an island and explored it.He found an animal which he did not know about. He called one of his men and asked him what it was. "Its a lion" the man told him. That was when Sang Nila Utama decided to name the island, Singapore, which meant Lion City.
However, we all know that it was in fact Sir Stamford Raffles who founded Singapore and started its days as a busy port for ships.
Though many says that Singapore is a young nation, but we have gone through many obstacles in the past. World War, the seperation of Singapore and Malaysia, the lack of resources and the military defense. We went through all that and more. I am proud of our forefathers and the pioneers of Singapore and I feel that our story can be use to inspier other countries that are facing difficulties. Singapore is a young country, but how many countries have faced what we faced?
Singapore is a unique country. We have our own special language that few other countries understand. Singlish! With the "lah","hor", what other better way to show our uniqueness? These words are even being compiled into a dictionaries for foreigners to understand us! Some locals want to eliminate the use of Singlish, but personally, I think that Singlish is what makes us special and we should not throw it away. To me, its like giving up our Merlion!
Another place of interest in Singapore would be our hawker centres. Few other places have dozens of stalls, all selling different cuisines, housed under one roof. Tourist coming to Singapore will be bowled over by the variety of food hawker centres have to offer.Chinese, Malay, Indian, Western cuisines can all be found there. A true demonstration of multi-racial!
All in all, Singapore has truly come a long way. It is now a first world country, with excellent medical service, entertainment and education. This is where I live. Majulah Singapura! L.Z.Y | 5:15 AM
